History question?

On the up side, reconstruction managed to hold the nation together after the war and reduce the tendency to revenge. New political parties were formed and gradually people came to feel they were once again living in a democracy. On the down side, the attempt at bringing freed slaves into anything resembling mainstream society failed almost totally. Not just in the South, but over most of the nation, ways were found to re-enslave the freedmen by economic means.
