Len Volcanic national park and places around?

For thanksgiving we are planning to visit Len volcanic national park but dont kno anything about it. We love scenic drives and ant to know what more can we do. Also, we love winters too. Is this a safe place, good hotels? things to do in and around this place? We live in San Jose and would also like to know what else can we see on the way to this place. Lake shasta etc etc?
