How do I read my archived messages on My Computer?

My messenger archives from anyone not on my friends list disappeared when I upgraded. I found them on my computer but cannot read. They are .dat files and are encrypted. I have opened the files in wordpad, word, and whatever else I own. I have searched the internet for anything on dat files and have no clue what they are talking about. Any help?
