Why do hamsters make that weird noise with their teeth?

If it's a grinding noise it can sometimes mean he's hungry, which is quite good. It means he feels comfortable enough to eat around his owner and outside his cage. However if it's more like chomping or snapping sound (imagine snapping your teeth together, that kind of noise), it's more likely an aggression or fear response. A constant almost purring noise is a content happy hamster =D
