Why does our military get praised while the police get bad mouthed?

People don't like the police because the police are the people handing out speeding fines, smacking wrists etc. The military is idolized by the media, i do respect the soldiers for what they are doing, dont get me wrong. People in this country, and most, dont have much interaction with the military forces.
